October 10 – 11, 2008

Thoburn UMC, St. Clairsville

Bring Bucks for Buckets to the Annual Celebration to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)!

Read about UMCOR’s urgent need for flood buckets.  UMCOR used more flood buckets during the

Midwest spring floods this year than they did in all relief efforts in 2007.

Since flood buckets are difficult to ship, bring a financial contribution in cash or checks made payable

to East Ohio United Methodist Women.

East Ohio UMW will forward the funds to UMCOR to replenish the supply of flood buckets.

School of Christian Mission
Lakeside Event
September 12-14, 2008

Eight ladies from Southern Hills District attended the School of Christian Mission at Lakeside on September 12 thru the 14th. Attendees included: District Officers, President Patty Ullman, Vice-President Deloris Ullmann, Membership Chairperson Beth Saling, East Conference Officer Ruth McElfresh, and members Cindy Ward from Batesville, Janet Kidd from Lower Salem, Helen Addis from Johnstown (Western Conference) and Suzan Weber from Woodsfield.

Dr. Charles Yoost, Senior Pastor at Church of the Saviour in Cleveland Heights led the study, "I Believe in Jesus." This session took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Orchestra Hall. A second study of the weekend was "Israel and Palestine." Led by George Johnson, this administrator from Ashland Theological Seminary and adjunct professor in Biblical Hebrew impressed us with his explanation of the complexities of the Middle East. The third study was "Native American Survival". Three sessions were held for this program. The leaders were Dr. Gloria Brown who serves the East Ohio Conference as part-time Associate Director of Racial Ethnic Minorities; Rev. Dr. Dan Hawk, Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Ashland Theological Seminary and Jeanette Kraus who works in the Office of Alumni Relations at Ohio Wesleyan University. She also is a Women's Division Director of UMW.

Other events included music, introductions, renewal of baptism, morning devotions, program resources, interest groups and evening vespers. The weekend culminated with a worship service in which Holy Communion was served.

If you have never attended a School of Mission, please consider it in the future. You will meet so many friends, learn so much and enjoy the richness of the experience as you return home.

God's Word is like refreshing rain
That waters crops and seed;
It brings new life to open hearts,
And meets us in our need. - Sper
